Altitude Climbing Endurance (ACE™) Training for Cyclists

Forward

This is a book about altitude-climbing-endurance training for cyclists. It concerns training for “hilly centuries+”—events over 100 miles with more than 10,000 feet of climbing.

The first part is an introduction to the essential elements of successful riding. Although the primary focus of this book is training, this introduction places training within an overall framework.

The next section reviews training principles, many of which are common to all sports. The workout variables of bicycle training and the components of high-end bicycle riding and racing success are presented. This part has been adapted from my book Smart Cycling, published by Simon & Schuster.

The third part of this book is about climbing and descending. It’s about technique as well as specific training to get you up hills faster.

Sections on heart-rate monitoring, the physiology of altitude, and the importance of pacing all compliment the basics of training and climbing.

All-day riding requires attention to endurance sport nutrition. The principles, as well as specific dietary suggestions are found here.

Equipment selection and care follows.

Most of us are motivated to participate in this type of bicycle riding—but we all have moments of doubt. By understanding a little bit about how our minds work, we can stay focused and motivated.

Finally specific target training goals and schedules are provided.

Beginners are cautioned to approach “all-out” or sustained efforts gradually, and riders over the age of 40 or those with known medical conditions are advised to consult a physician before embarking on an exercise program.

Riding 100 or more miles in one day, climbing more than 10,000 feet in that day is not for everyone. If it’s for you, this book will make the going easier and faster.
