Injury: Tour de France (Introduction)

Cycling carries health risks.

There are both traumatic (sudden) and overuse (generally, over a period of time) risks of injury. There are medical risks, including hyponatremia (low blood sodium), dehydration, and hyperthermia (overheating).

In this handout I’ll review traumatic injuries in the 2002 Tour de France and give estimates of disabling-traumatic injury rates and death rates.
